FAQ's
Ascende Schola is a men's Catholic schola based in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, founded in 2022. The group is dedicated to reviving and preserving traditional sacred music, drawing from both ancient composers and contemporary sacred works to bring beauty and reverence to liturgical celebrations and concerts throughout southeastern Wisconsin.
Historically, a schola is a choir or singing group dedicated to performing sacred music within the Catholic liturgical tradition. The term originates from the early Church and refers to a trained ensemble whose primary purpose is to elevate worship through choral music, particularly Gregorian chant and sacred polyphony.
Gregorian chant is the ancient monophonic sacred music of the Roman Catholic Church, characterized by its unaccompanied vocal lines and Latin texts drawn from Scripture and liturgical tradition. It is one of the oldest and most enduring forms of Christian music, and a cornerstone of Ascende Schola's repertoire.
Polyphony is choral music composed for multiple independent vocal lines sung simultaneously. Composers such as Palestrina, Victoria, and Byrd are among the most celebrated contributors to this tradition within the Catholic Church, which Ascende Schola draws from alongside Gregorian chant.
The Catholic Church has long recognized sacred music as an integral part of the liturgy, not merely an accompaniment to it. Documents such as the Second Vatican Council's Sacrosanctum Concilium affirm that Gregorian chant holds a place of primacy in liturgical worship. Ascende Schola's mission is to make this living tradition accessible to parishes and communities throughout Wisconsin.
Ascende Schola performs at Catholic weddings, funeral Masses, and other liturgical events throughout southeastern Wisconsin.
We recommend booking 2–3 months in advance for weddings and special events to ensure availability and allow adequate time for repertoire planning and rehearsal preparation.
